As a reporter, she’s used to covering the news.
Now she’s the headline.
Alex Vlodnachek has been a reporter for 12 years, a P.R. rep for three months, and a murder suspect for all of 24 hours. When her agency’s double-dealing CEO is stabbed, scheming co-workers cast the new redhead as a compelling red herring. The story is media catnip—especially her salacious nickname: Vlod the Impaler.
Even Alex has to admit she looks guilty.
Out of a job and under suspicion, Alex is running low on cash, when she’s visited by a second disaster: her family. Soon her tiny bungalow is bursting with her nearest and not-so-dearest. To keep herself out of jail—and save what’s left of her sanity—Alex returns to her reporting roots. She goes undercover to reclaim her life, break the story, and unmask a murderer. Pretty much in that order.
What she doesn’t know: The killer also has a to-do list.
And Alex is on it.
Interview with the Author
What initially got you interested in writing?
I blame my family. They love books and reading. And if you’re around books long enough, sooner or later you try to write one.
What genres do you write in?
Mystery – and some have called it “cozy mystery.” I’ve always pegged CONFESSIONS OF A RED HERRING as part mystery, part chick lit and part humor. And I love dogs, so it had to have a dog in it.
What drew you to writing these specific genres?
I’ve always loved reading mysteries. And when the idea for this one struck, the plot was definitely a murder mystery. The rest was pure Alex (my main character). When she bounced onto the page, she had an attitude and a humorous outlook on life. She definitely doesn’t take herself too seriously.
How did you break into the field?
In baby steps. First, I just wanted to tell a story and write the book. When I finished, I knew I needed an agent. Erin Niumata of Folio Literary, read CONFESSIONS OF A RED HERRING, loved it and wanted to rep it. She did all the heavy lifting.
What do you want readers to take away from reading your works?
I hope they get caught up in the mystery, even as they laugh and enjoy Alex and her crazy family. And I’d love it if they’re curious about what happens next. In the sequel, SEEING RED, Alex goes to a glamorous cocktail party and gets mixed up with spies, art thieves and a very determined murderer. She also runs into a few people from her past. And she learns a little more about Ian, the mysterious B&B owner across the street.
What do you find most rewarding about writing?
I like telling stories. And when a reader writes that they enjoyed the book or really related to some aspect of it, that makes my week!
What do you find most challenging about writing?
I always need more time – and more coffee.
What advice would you give to people wanting to enter the field?
At the risk of quoting Nike: Just do it. That’s why we have libraries and bookstores: the world needs more books.
What type of books do you enjoy reading?
Everything. The bookstore is my happy place. Especially when it smells like coffee. But I have a weakness for mysteries.
Is there anything else besides writing you think people would find interesting about you?
In my “other life,” I’m a personal finance writer. So I also write about money.
What are the best ways to connect with you, or find out more about your work?
Thanks for asking! You can visit me at: ConfessionsofaRedHerring.com. I’m also on Goodreads, Bookbub and Amazon. And you can follow me on Twitter – my handle is @ReadAboutMoney.
