The organizers have rustled up plenty of surprises for the literary conference at Tattered Star Ranch. Interview with the Author
What initially got you interested in writing? My parents reading to me…and the library trips with all of the beautiful books on the shelves. I fell in love with the whole business of storytelling right away!
What genres do you write in? Fiction, poetry, nonfiction
What drew you to writing these specific genres? I’ve always written a little bit of everything. It was a longstanding dream to write a mystery, though—as a young reader, I was immediately hooked by the Trixie Belden and Nancy Drew books.
How did you break into the field? With mystery in particular, I joined Sisters in Crime and listened to everything that the wise and experienced authors on the email list were saying. Among other things, they discussed the William F. Deeck-Malice Domestic Grant opportunity, which really kicked things off! It was also from SinC that I heard about Bouchercon, the first mystery conference I attended, where I met my future publisher.
What do you want readers to take away from reading your works? I hope they enjoy the reading experience.
What do you find most rewarding about writing? The chance to tell a story and shape something creatively. Also, talking with wonderful readers.
What do you find most challenging about writing? The most challenging part is probably whatever I’m doing at that particular moment. It’s all demanding in different ways.
What advice would you give to people wanting to enter the field? Read a lot, connect with the professional groups for people writing in the same genre, and don’t give up.
What type of books do you enjoy reading? Mysteries are my favorite things to read, but I read widely as part of my teaching job. I’m especially drawn to strong characters, twisty plots, and humor.
Is there anything else besides writing you think people would find interesting about you? I’m a mom and I teach full-time, so everything is a juggling act. I don’t know if that’s interesting, but it’s true!
