It’s October in South Cove, California, and the locals in the quaint resort seem to be happily pairing off in the lull before the holidays. Everyone, that is, except for Jill Gardner’s elderly aunt, who just dumped her besotted fiancé—and she won’t say why.

When Jill hosts a talk at Coffee, Books, and More on the topic of elder abuse, all that’s really on her mind is lunch. But the topic hits close to home when she discovers Aunt Jackie has been getting mysterious calls. Jill’s certain the caller is a con artist, of course, but her feisty aunt claims to understand this, though she’s still shaken—and Harrold’s still heartbroken. Who’s behind the scam and why was her aunt targeted? When a volunteer from the Senior Project is found murdered, Jill’s detective boyfriend is on the case—and it soon becomes clear no one is safe when a caller from beyond becomes a killer in their midst.

Character Blog Post

Hi there. I’m Harrold Snider. I own the model train store in South Cove, but you’ve probably heard more rumors about me since I’m the one that got dumped by Jackie Ekroth in the book Lynn Cahoon wrote called Killer Party.

I have to say I was blindsided. Jackie and I had been engaged for a few months and she seemed crazy excited about the upcoming wedding. I told her she could do whatever she wanted, but I would have gone to Bakerstown and hit the county courthouse for a justice of the peace. Now, thinking back, I wish I would have insisted.

She loves me. I know that.  I can see it in her eyes when she sees me on the street. We live in a small town. There’s no way she can avoid running in to me at least once a week. Maybe I’m a love-struck old man, but I really thought we’d spend the rest of our lives together.

Now, everyone’s worried about me. Lille, from the diner, has been over every week to help me clean my apartment and most nights with dinner. If I didn’t know better, I’d think she was sweet on me, but Lille’s just a dear family friend. She and my late wife were as close as thieves before, well, we don’t want to talk about more sadness.

Anyway, I’d love it if anyone could figure out why Jackie is being so bull headed on this. I’m pretty sure I haven’t done anything to make her leave, but who knows. All I need is one grand gesture. One gift that I can give her to make her see that I’m her soulmate.

If you think of anything, stop by The Train Station and let me know. I’m willing to do most anything to get her back.

Harrold.
