Facing a New Computer Program

It was Patricia Moyes who said,  “Research is endlessly beguiling; it’s the writing that’s work.” I could happily spend my time roaming along the rivers in Hampshire, gazing into the sea in Cornwall and contemplating Ralph’s Cross on the Yorkshire Moors, but I do have to come home and write. While it is work, I love it. Even the editing. Even the re-writes. If I could stay in my study and create characters, laugh at their dialogue and spend hours searching for the absolutely right word, I’d be happy. Not possible, of course. Someone has to cook the meals; someone has to walk the dog; someone has to market the finished book. I must get my books out to readers because readers need new books–and I like readers. Once I connect with readers, I’m happy. It’s the in-between stage, the stage where I have to set up mailing systems, connect with other marketers and respond to computer programs that irk me. I have to choose the computer program I’m going to use. The various and varied types of programs offered to help me be more efficient in reaching out to readers almost overwhelm me. I think readers are savvy. They know about these programs and how to use them. They connect with authors and they can be a wonderful help in their responses, but I have to reach out to them. When I have made my choice of what program to use and filled in all the little details required to make those programs work, I’ll be relieved—until the program doesn’t work, or the power goes off or…. When I consider all the different computer programs I’ve learned over my writing career and all the new ways of inputting information and connecting I’ve mastered, I should be confident that this new organizational tool will be easy. Time-consuming, but easy. Somehow writing an 80,000 word book seems more possible.
