Interview with the Author

What initially got you interested in writing?

I always had an interest in writing. At first, I did short stories, poems and a Shakespearean-type play that I made my bunk mates act out at summer camp. Then while in graduate school for nursing, I bought a book called Structuring Your Novel. This taught me how to write a full-length work of fiction. I wrote six books before I finally sold one.

What genres do you write in?

I started out writing science fiction romance. Now I write cozy mysteries. The Bad Hair Day series has 15 books, a novella and a short story. A Bad Hair Day Cookbook is my first cookbook. It features quick and easy recipes for the home cook. The commentary is from my hairstylist sleuth, Marla Vail. Cooking tips, anecdotes and excerpts are included.

What drew you to writing these specific genres?

I enjoy reading cozy mysteries for the humor, the sense of justice, the quirky characters, and the hint of romance that is usually included. You can often learn about an interesting occupation while enjoying a lighthearted story that has a happy ending. I wanted to write the same kind of books that I like to read.

How did you break into the field?

I was writing science fiction romance at the time when my publisher did not pick up my option book. My agent suggested I write a straight mystery series since I was including mysteries in my romances. So I wrote a mystery proposal. Kensington bought it, and that was the start of my series. Permed to Death is number one if you want to start there, although you can jump into my series at any point. Trimmed to Death is my latest title. Look for Easter Hair Hunt, book number 16, in March 2020.

What do you want readers to take away from reading your works?

Regarding the cookbook, I hope readers find some appealing recipes to make at home and ones that will inspire them to spend more time in the kitchen. It’s gratifying to cook for friends and family. I had a lot of fun making all the dishes featured in this book. I love cooking and sharing recipes along with food photos. My recipe collection got so big that I decided to compile them into a cookbook. It’s great for home cooks as well as mystery fans. Also, A Bad Hair Day Cookbook makes a great gift for the holidays, so think about adding this book to your gift bags along with a kitchen whisk, a colorful spatula, and a set of dish towels. And don’t forget to buy one for yourself!

What do you find most rewarding about writing?

I love hearing from readers. It’s very gratifying when fans say what they like about a book or the series as a whole. Often I’ll ask their opinion on something, like a book title, on my Facebook page. Our interactions there make me feel connected. I enjoy meeting readers in person as well.

What do you find most challenging about writing?

The constant need for marketing can be daunting. I enjoy interacting with fans on Facebook, but you have to continually have a presence on social media or people will forget about you. You need to offer new releases at regular intervals or readers will move on to their next favorite author. It’s especially difficult for indie authors to get a foothold unless they already have a fan base. Even then, you find it’s a struggle to get reviews and recognition.

What advice would you give to people wanting to enter the field?

Do your homework. You have to train and learn, same as for any career. Realize this is a business, and marketing will be required. Get involved in the writing community. This is the best thing you can do to learn the business aspects. Attend workshops and conferences, join a critique group, and enter writing contests that offer feedback on your work. Follow the 3 P’s – Practice, Professionalism, and Perseverance.

What type of books do you enjoy reading?

I love genre fiction. At any time, I’ll be reading two or three books. Cozy and historical mysteries, historical romance, and sci-fi/fantasy are my go-to books for escapist reads.

Is there anything else besides writing you think people would find interesting about you?

I enjoy Caribbean cruises and visits to Disney World. In my early days, I used to write travel journals. I have a plastic bin filled with these works. Maybe that’s how I really got started writing. Now I can share these experiences with others via my blog, where you’ll find my fun foodie reports, travel notes, and photos along with articles on writing.
