All ten-year-old Alexandra Atwood wants for Christmas is to get her dad and the B&B’s cook Marquetta under the mistletoe. After all, how can they get married if they don’t kiss first?
When murder strikes in Seaside Cove, bed-and-breakfast owner Rick Atwood is asked to help find the killer. But this will not be an easy case to crack. Not only did the killer contaminate the crime scene, but there are suspects all over town. And they all received the same Christmas sweater from the victim.
Alex hears rumors about the murder and decides that since she’s on Christmas break, she has time for a little multitasking. She launches her own investigation even as she continues her efforts to get her dad and Marquetta together.
Just when Rick thinks he’s identified all the suspects, he discovers a new one—his estranged wife. With the days until Christmas ticking down, Rick feels pressured from all sides. He needs to solve the case. He needs to send his wife back to New York. But the one thing he doesn’t need is for his daughter to be one step ahead of him and the cops.
Interview with the Author
What initially got you interested in writing?
I’m one of those tired clichés who feels he’s always been a writer. But the truth is, I lost sight of that urge to write for about twenty-five years. I’d enjoyed writing when I was in school, but was a terrible student of the English language, grammar, etc. In my late thirties, I was under tremendous pressure at work and turned to writing as an outlet. When I completed my first book, I realized writing was a cathartic process for me. That realization was followed by another—if I was going to do this “writing thing,” I needed to get better at it. With each book I write, I strive to perfect my craft.
What genres do you write in?
My favorite genre to write is cozy mystery. I’ve also written thrillers and some traditional mysteries.
What drew you to writing these specific genres?
I enjoy the challenge of telling a tale without resorting to dead bodies or bedroom hijinks. In my opinion, not being able to use foul language to show emotions not only forces the writer to work harder, but ultimately creates more tension. And making people laugh, which I see as a key element in a good cozy, is vastly more difficult than making them cringe. The bottom line is, I enjoy a challenge, and writing cozy mysteries can definitely be a challenge.
How did you break into the field?
As an independently published author, I didn’t have a lot of “breaking in” to do. I did, however, spend many years writing before I ever published.
What do you want readers to take away from reading your works?
I want readers to finish one of my books feeling entertained. I also like them to walk away feeling as though they’ve learned something new. One of the overarching themes in the Seaside Cove Bed & Breakfast Mystery series is finding the San Manuel, a 400-year-old sunken Spanish galleon. Readers of the series are learning things about the treasure-hunting industry they probably never knew.
What do you find most rewarding about writing?
The most rewarding thing for me in writing is transporting a reader away from her daily life into a world where she truly cares about the characters. When I hear readers tell me they love the characters, that is extremely rewarding.
What do you find most challenging about writing?
Making a reader laugh is probably about the most difficult task a writer can undertake. I work very hard to do this without resorting to gags, slapstick, or other tricks.
What advice would you give to people wanting to enter the field?
You only get one first book—make it a good one. The good news is, anyone can publish a book these days. That’s also the bad news. So many people write bad books, and you don’t want to be one of them. Find the genre you’re best at, get honest critiques from objective sources (not your mom!), and edit, edit, edit!
What type of books do you enjoy reading?
I enjoy a well-written cozy mystery or a traditional mystery.
Is there anything else besides writing you think people would find interesting about you?
In addition to writing, I’m also an amateur photographer. I’ve been told I have an excellent eye for composition. I share my photos on my website and social media.
