Typical Writing Day I love those stories where writers wake late mornings in their beautiful, brick-walled apartments in some glamourous city, make strong coffee in their vintage presses, peruse the newspaper, answer emails to their agents, before cracking their knuckles and settling in to write—uninterrupted!—for the day! That’s not my story! My typical writing day starts at five a.m. I walk the dog and hash out plot lines and conflicts. She’s a great listener. 😉 Then I answer a couple of emails, get everyone in the house up, lunches packed, and drive everyone to school. Home again, I tire out the dog with a walk and mentally plot out my writing. Then I get to my writing work. Sometimes the dog needs attention, so I move my laptop near her (my home office doesn’t get a lot of use). I do promo work first like interacting with readers, answering questions, blogging, etc. I eat lunch at my desk (or wherever I am) so there’s no downtime for that. Carpool is insane at my girls’ schools, so by 1:30-2 I’m on the road to pick up the kids. I love music, so I use the travel time to listen to music that can work as inspiration for different scenes. (My playlists are on my website: www.CathrineGoldstein.com) Then I get to carpool and write for an hour and a half. Then drive everyone home, and I’ll be back on my computer when everyone goes to sleep around 8:30-9. Glamorous, right? It’s such a boring schedule I think it’s what drives me to write characters with such interesting lives!!
