It’s not long before Callie and her new business partner, best friend Chantelle Marchand, get their first client: a woman who wants to find out everything she can about her grandmother, Anneliese Prei, and how she came to a “bad end” in 1956. It sounds like a perfect first assignment. Except for one thing: Anneliese’s past winds its way into Callie’s present, and not in a manner anyone—least of all Callie—could have predicted.

Interview with the Author

What initially got you interested in writing?

I’ve been writing stories inside my head for as long as I can remember. In elementary school, I had a long walk there and back (today kids get bussed) so I would make up a story and sometimes it would take me a week to finish it. But I never wrote them down. It wasn’t until after I was married and I was commuting 90+ minutes a day that I said to my husband, “Maybe I could record (on a tape recorder) the stories in my head while I’m driving.” And he’s like, “You write stories in your head?” I honestly thought everyone did that. In 2002, I took a Creative Writing course. I’ve been writing down my stories ever since.

I’ve also been a freelance writer / editor since 2003, when I left my corporate accounting job. Although I did well, got into management and all of that, I’m not really cut out for a corporate 9-5 life and finally got the courage to walk away. Since then, I’ve had hundreds of articles published in U.S. and Canadian magazines, trade publications, and papers. I’m currently the Senior Editor for New England Antiques Journal.

What genres do you write in?

Mystery, though I’m dabbling on research for a non-fiction project. I have three short “literary” stories published in THEMA, a New Orleans literary journal.

What drew you to writing these specific genres?

My go-to read is always mystery and suspense. I wanted to write a book that I’d want to read. THEMA was fun to write for, because they provide a theme and a deadline, so it was good for me in the early days of my writing.

How did you break into the field?

Accepting and learning from rejection. Taking courses. I have a two Creative Writing diplomas – one from Winghill Writing School and one from Gotham Writers (both online learning). Lots of hard work; the harder I work, the luckier I get.

What do you want readers to take away from reading your works?

First and foremost, I want them to enjoy them, to escape from reality if only for a while.

What do you find most rewarding about writing?

Erica Jong said it best: When I sit down at my writing desk, time seems to vanish. I think it’s a wonderful way to spend one’s life.

What do you find most challenging about writing?

It depends on the day. Some days the words flow. Some days they don’t. Those don’t days are tough, but I accept that it’s part of the process. Even on the “don’t” days, ideas come to me…sometimes later in the day, but they come.

What advice would you give to people wanting to enter the field?

Write every day. The writing muscle is like every other muscle. The more you use it, the stronger it becomes.

What type of books do you enjoy reading?

Mystery and suspense, primarily, though I do read other things. I’m reading quite a bit about Lake Superior these days. We have a camp near Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, but on the Canadian side.

Is there anything else besides writing you think people would find interesting about you?

I love to golf (but golf badly). I run (but slowly, I’m more of a plodder). I own a 3-year-old Golden Retriever, Gibbs, named after Leroy Jethro Gibbs on NCIS. He’s my fourth Golden and fifth dog.
