The ancient Indian art of tracking is his greatest strength…
And also his biggest weakness.
Fish and Wildlife State Trooper Gabriel Hawke believes he’s chasing poachers.
However, he comes upon a wildlife biologist standing over a body that is wearing a wolf tracking collar.
He uses master tracker skills taught to him by his Nez Perce grandfather to follow clues on the mountain. Paper trails and the whisper of rumors in the rural community where he works, draws Hawke to a conclusion that he finds bitter.
Arresting his brother-in-law ended his marriage, could solving this murder ruin a friendship?

The Pulp and Mystery Shelf
Mystery and adventure have always been my favorite things to write. I enjoy taking characters on journeys I would like to go on, and piecing together clues like a puzzle.
I enjoy the research to discover more about an occupation. To date my favorite hands-on research for a character was participating in a ride-along with an Oregon State Trooper from the Fish and Wildlife division in the county where I grew up. Wallowa County is a vast area with a low population. It requires the Fish and Wildlife Troopers to not only do their jobs as game wardens but also as a State Trooper. They can be off in a remote area looking for poachers or trespassers and get a call that there was a wreck on the North Highway. They have to drop what they are doing and head to the wreck to take down statements and collect information.
The day I spent with the Trooper, I learned about different things he’d been called out on and how their days are spent pretty much being their own boss. They are sent places by dispatch, but usually start off their day with a specific plan of what they will do from either phone calls about trespassers, dead animals, of checking for fishing or hunting infractions. They can take their vehicle home, and call dispatch when they are ready to work and when they are done for the day. They relay to dispatch where they are going but not necessarily what they are doing. And if they are trying to catch a trespasser, they may just tell dispatch they will be out of radio contact to avoid anyone knowing where they are going. No two days are alike. In the summer they could be in the mountains at the high lakes one day checking fisherman and the next day doing the same thing in a boat on the Snake River checking fishermen. The thing I found interesting and use a lot in my book, is that they don’t wear their uniforms when they are in the mountains. They dress like every other hunter/horseback packer. They do this to keep from being a target. On the mountain, in the forest, they could be seen before they see a person who is doing something unlawful. Depending on the person, if they are doing something illegal the person could decide to shoot a game warden rather than be caught. Or unknowingly, an officer could ride into an area that is being used to grow marijuana, which would get them or anyone else wandering in shot.
I also found the fact that they are basically doing two jobs all the time as a wonderful way to keep my character always busy and bring him into contact with everyone in the county, not just sportsmen. I love that aspect the most about writing my character Gabriel Hawke. He can be all over the county and involved in more than game violations.
Having my character be a Master Tracker also gives me the ability to have him go places to help track and to educate others in the art of tracking. Even though Wallowa County is 5200 square miles, the population of 7000 will make readers wonder at so many deaths. 😉 But it is also a place where many people come from other places to hunt, fish, and camp. Bringing in more chances for people to come to a murderous end.
Here is a blurb of my newly released book, Murder of Ravens.
