The answer to whodunit may lie beyond the veil . . .

November in upstate New York can be chilly, but Kailyn Wilde’s shop, Abracadabra, is a cozy respite where you can find lotions, potions, and plenty of warm, feline company. But what customers don’t know is that the proprietor has some unusual powers—and unusual friends, including the renowned magician Merlin, who’s been transported into the modern world. All of which comes in handy when there’s a murder to be solved . . .

Investigative journalist Ryan Cutler has perished in a car accident in New Camel, and his friend, Travis, suspects foul play—especially when the reporter’s notes reveal a mysterious list of dead men’s names. Kailyn wants to help, but she’s also got her hands full with the curmudgeonly Merlin, who’s not exactly maintaining a low profile. Between keeping the wizard under wraps and mixing up cold remedies that work like magic, she’ll have to tap into her many talents to figure out a killer’s fatal formula . . .

About the Author

Interview with the Author

  1. What initially got you interested in writing? I really don’t know. I wrote my first story when I was six and didn’t think about why. As an adult I’ve assumed that writing is simply part of who I am. Artists love to paint, musicians love to play music, I love to write. Some might say I was a writer in a past life and the desire to write was so deeply ingrained in my being that it carried over into this life.
  2. What genres do you write in? Although that first story of mine was about horses, I haven’t written about them again. My first three books as an adult were in the paranormal genre, including one paranormal romance. My last eight books have been cozy mysteries with a paranormal element. I guess it’s obvious I like the paranormal. I think it gives us an opportunity to stretch our minds into new possibilities.
  3. What drew you to writing these specific genres? I have always been interested in open-ended subjects that have no definitive answers. They’re like a playground where the imagination can run free.
  4. How did you break into the field? Another writer gave me the name of an agent, who liked my book and sent it to an editor who liked it enough to publish it as Ghost Fire. The book was also condensed in Redbook magazine. Years later when I was able to get the rights back, I republished it under the title For Everything a Season.
  5. What do you want readers to take away from reading your works?

I want readers to be entertained by my books, but sometimes I want to shine the light on a subject I think is important. Magick Run Amok is such a book. Along with the mystery and a lot of humor there is a serious issue.

  6. What do you find most rewarding about writing? I love it when a particular line or paragraph captures precisely what I want to say. I love hearing from readers who enjoy my work. I love the feeling of completion when I finish writing a book after laboring for 9 months. It’s a lot like giving birth. And when I hold the published book in my hands it’s like holding a different kind of baby in my hands.
  7. What do you find most challenging about writing? There are days when it’s a challenge just to write a sentence I like. Sometimes it’s hard to figure out plot points. When that happens I go to the gym and get on the treadmill. Without fail, when my body is busy working, my mind is free to think and solutions are suddenly easy to see. Two birds, one stone.
  8. What advice would you give to people wanting to enter the field? Be prepared for rejection and don’t let it deter you. Don’t ever give up. Try to write everyday even if you throw it away in the end. Many people think it’s easier to be a writer these days with indie publishing. I don’t. You’re competing against hundreds of thousands of new books hitting the internet every year. It may be millions by now. It’s awfully hard to get noticed.
  9. What type of books do you enjoy reading? I enjoy all genres as well as mainstream. Here are just a few I’ve loved: Watchers by Dean Koontz, The Keep by F.Paul Wilson, Me Before You by JoJo Moyes, The Red Tent by Anita Diamant, most of Anita Shreve’s books, Gone With the Wind by Margaret Mitchell, The Crystal Cave series (about Merlin) by Mary Stewart, The Light Between Oceans by ML Stedman and too many cozy mysteries to single out only a few.
  10. Is there anything else besides writing you think people would find interesting about you? I had breast cancer at the age of 45. When my treatment was over, my surgical oncologist and I, along with two other survivors, started a nonprofit organization to provide peer support and information to newly diagnosed breast cancer patients (men as well as women.) I named it Lean On Me. The organization has already provided services for thousands of women (and men) on Long Island and is still going strong. The dozens of survivors we trained to provide the peer support are among the most terrific people I have ever met.

Sharon Pape describes her writing career as having two stages. Back in the dark ages, before computers were in every household, she had three paranormal books published. The first one was condensed by Redbook Magazine, the first paperback original they ever condensed. Then life brought her an unexpected challenge, by the name of breast cancer. After treatment, she and her oncologist started a not-for-profit to provide information and peer support to breast cancer patients. With the organization up and running, she returned to her first love – writing. This time around she’s been writing cozy mysteries with a paranormal twist. That Olde White Magick is the second book in her Abracadabra Mysteries.
