Did honor force him to abandon his wife and kids? Or is he just a weasel?
Six years ago, Marcy Wagner hired PI Angelina Bonaparte to find her missing husband Hank, who cleaned out their bank accounts and disappeared. Then Angie finds his obituary in an upstate newspaper. Marcy wants to know what why he abandoned her and the kids. Angie does, too!
She embarks on a mission that will blow the lid off Hank’s hidden life and reveal the reasons he ran. Was he a lowdown skunk? Or did he do the honorable thing when he left? Angie follows a twisted path to the truth and discovers that it lies perilously close to her own family life.
Interview with the Author
What genres do you write in?
I write mysteries.
What drew you to writing these specific genres?
I love to read mysteries and I have a logical mind (former IT manager!), so I naturally gravitated to that genre.
How did you break into the field?
As part of a local writing studio in southeast Wisconsin, I finished my first mystery, Truth Kills, and tried to find an agent. When the spreadsheet of rejections reached the point where I wanted to give up, one of the other writers at the studio suggested I submit to her small press, and I was accepted!
What do you want readers to take away from reading your works?
I hope that they’ll find the experience an enjoyable use of their time and maybe pick up a nugget or two on how to be safer while living in an insecure world.
What do you find most rewarding about writing?
Every now and then, the words flow without effort and I feel the exhilaration of a job done well.
What do you find most challenging about writing?
Writing well is hard work! It’s not just about getting the ideas on the page. There’s the editing, the book covers, the interior design, writing the book description–so many pieces that make the potential reader want to pick it up or turn away from it, and none are directly related to the actual writing.
What advice would you give to people wanting to enter the field?
Invest in the best. Rise above the glut of poorly-edited material and amateur covers. Spend some money to get to where you want to be.
What type of books do you enjoy reading?
I love a good mystery and find the many subgenres so rich in material. One of my favorites is historical mystery, because it enlivens my understanding of life in the past, not just wars and kings. I’m also a bit of an astronomy geek and like a layperson-accessible book or article about the latest fascinating findings about our universe. And I read about theology and cultural shifts.
Is there anything else besides writing you think people would find interesting about you?
I’m an ordained minister in the National Association of Congregational Christian Churches, which some find hard to connect to a writer of mysteries involving murder and crime. Readers should know that my works are not Christian fiction. I’ve tried to write for that readership, but it comes across as preachy to me.
What are the best ways to connect with you, or find out more about your work?
My website has a wealth of information about my books and me, as well as all the usual social media connections and my email address.

About the Author
Nanci Rathbun is a lifelong reader of mysteries – historical, contemporary, futuristic, paranormal, hard-boiled, cozy … you can find them all on her bookshelves. She brings logic and planning to her writing from a background as an IT project manager, and attention to characters and dialog from her second career as a Congregationalist minister.
Nanci grew up an Army brat, living in Germany, France, and Korea, as well as several states in the U.S. After her dad retired from the service, the family settled in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. There, Nanci raised her daughter and son, while working at AT&T. She never expected to move, but when her second grandchild was on the way, she wanted to be closer. One of her greatest joys is hearing her three granddaughters shout ‘Nana’ when she comes in their front door in Fort Collins, Colorado.
Nanci’s Maltipoo, Teeny, and she now live in Wellington, Colorado. No matter where she makes her home, she will always be a Packers fan.
