Interview with the Author

What initially got you interested in writing?

I’ve always been a reader, and before I could read my parents read to me. I suppose that’s what got me interested in stories in the first place. I took a number of English courses in college, many of which focused on creative writing. Then I went to law school, where there’s a great emphasis placed on research and writing. When I practiced law I spent a good portion of each day writing.

What genres do you write in?

I write gothic and contemporary mysteries, but I also have a cozy mystery coming out in time for Christmas.

What drew you to writing these specific genres?

Mysteries are my favorite books to read, so I suppose it was natural that I’d turn to mysteries when I started writing fiction.

How did you break into the field?

I decided I didn’t want to go the agent route (this is a decision I continue to weigh, but so far it’s working for me), so I sent query letters directly to publishers that accept unagented submissions. The third one (Kensington) asked to see my manuscript and I had a contract just a few weeks later. My experience with Kensington has been wonderful.

What do you want readers to take away from reading your works?

I want readers to feel like they’ve had a vacation after they’ve finished one of my books. I write to entertain people and to highlight different places I’ve visited and loved. One of the greatest compliments someone could pay me would be to say, “I read your book and now the Thousand Islands/the Big Island of Hawaii/etc. is on my bucket list.”

What do you find most rewarding about writing?

I love having a job that I can’t wait to do every day. I don’t like to take days off and when I do I’m just itching to get back to the keyboard.

What do you find most challenging about writing?

I find it a challenge to keep all the little details (and sometimes the big details!) straight throughout the entire time I write a novel. There have been drafts in which I’ve killed the same person twice, forgotten how much time has passed from the beginning of the novel, and forgotten what season it is. That’s what editing is for!

What advice would you give to people wanting to enter the field?

Read a lot and write something every day. It can be a blog post, a letter, anything. Just write. And start promoting the day you decide to write a book, not the day you finish it.

What type of books do you enjoy reading?

From the time I read my first Nancy Drew book, mysteries have been my favorite. I don’t read mysteries all the time, but I always come back to them. And cookbooks. I read cookbooks like novels—I like to read them before falling asleep at night and they’re my reading material of choice whenever I eat a meal by myself.

Is there anything else besides writing you think people would find interesting about you?

As you may have guessed from the previous answer, I love to cook. Baking is my preferred form of cooking, but I’m getting away from that a little bit because we’re all trying to eat healthier at my house. Cooking is my favorite way to unwind. I like to take cooking classes when I go on vacation and I love cooking foods from all over the world. My kids don’t necessarily love it, but we keep trying!

Amy M. Reade is a cook, chauffeur, household CEO, doctor, laundress, maid, psychiatrist, warden, seer, teacher, and pet whisperer. In other words, a wife, mother, and recovering attorney.
