The complications keep coming with the unexpected arrival of Kit’s younger brother Sebastian, a hippie protestor who seems more concerned about corporate greed than the professional problems he causes for his sister. To make matters even worse, the romantic lives of Kit’s closest friends are driving her crazy, diverting her attention from the mystery she’s been tasked to solve. The search for the killer requires her to tussle with an investigative journalist right out of a noir novel, a congresswoman fixated on getting a statue of James Madison installed on the Capitol grounds and a bossy botanist who would do anything to protect the plants he loves. When the murderer sends a threatening message to Kit via a highly unusual delivery mechanism, Kit knows she must find the killer or risk the lives of her friends and loved ones.

Eat, Drink, and Be Merry in Murder
Readers who live outside Washington, D.C. often remark that there’s a lot of eating and drinking in my mystery novels. That might be true, but it’s reflective of the sociable ethos within our nation’s capital. Of all the aspects related to writing fiction, sampling the fare from the restaurants and bars which make an appearance in my books rates at the top. Occasionally, readers will patronize the various establishments they’re learned about in my books. Besides entertaining with a good mystery, I’m glad to inform visitors to Washington about fun, sometimes out of the way places that can provide tourists with a splash of local culture.
Like many Washingtonians, my congressional staffer turned amateur sleuth Kit Marshall loves eating out and can’t resist a tasty cocktail. Here’s some of the places that made it into my latest installment in the series, Gore in the Garden
Ted’s Bulletin: A local chain, Ted’s provides excellent comfort food all year long. In Gore in the Garden, Kit and her friends visit Ted’s after the discovery of a dead body. They indulge in alcoholic milkshakes (a Ted’s staple) and homemade pop-tarts.
Nam-Viet: This Vietnamese restaurant has been family owned and operated in the Washington, D.C. suburb of Arlington for over thirty years. In the book, Kit goes to dinner at Nam-Viet with her husband Doug, her best friend Meg, and her brother Sebastian. The restaurant is located within the Clarendon neighborhood in Arlington, which welcomed a large refugee population after the Fall of Saigon in 1975.
Harold Black: This speakeasy located near Capitol Hill is as mysterious as it comes. The entrance to Harold Black’s is hidden, giving Gore in the Garden a healthy dose of noir. Kit meets a suspicious newspaper reporter at the bar, who agrees to help her with the murder investigation. The handcrafted cocktails are legendary, making it a welcome respite from sleuthing.
Mr. Henry’s: A local neighborhood pub with a great history of jazz, Mr. Henry’s has been in business for over fifty years on Capitol Hill. In my book, Kit meets Sebastian and her dog Clarence at an outdoor patio table for lunch at Mr. Henry’s. The food and drinks aren’t pretentious or overpriced, giving good reason for its status as a Washington, D.C. mainstay.
The next time you plan a trip to Washington, be sure to consult my books for reliable insider tips for wining and dining. If I include a restaurant, pub, or bar in one of my books, it means I’ve been there and had a good time. Don’t be dissuaded if a crime happens at one of the various locations I feature in the series. While the descriptions of the locations are true, the murders are made up!

Colleen J. Shogan has been reading mysteries since the age of six. She conceived of the plot of her first mystery, “Stabbing in the Senate,” one morning while taking a walk in her suburban Washington, D.C. neighborhood. A political scientist by training, Colleen has taught American politics at Yale, George Mason University, Georgetown, and Penn. She previously worked on Capitol Hill as a legislative staffer in the United States Senate and as the Deputy Director of the Congressional Research Service. She is currently a senior executive at the Library of Congress who works on great initiatives such as the National Book Festival. Colleen lives in Arlington, Virginia with her husband Rob and their beagle mutt Conan. Colleen’s first book won the Next Generation Indie Prize for Best Mystery. Her books have been RONE and Killer Nashville finalists in the mystery category.
