 Interview With The Author

What initially got you interested in writing?

My diary! It started out as a place to jot down the highlights of what was happening in my life. It soon became a place to record dreams and aspirations. These turned into poetry. Poetry became short stories and now I am writing full length books.

What genres do you write in?

I write in the cozy mystery genre, specifically the culinary cozies. I love to cook and experiment with food, and it is a big part of my books.

What drew you to writing these specific genres?

I’m a bookworm. I always have been. I enjoy reading tales of mystery and adventure. The only gift I ever wanted as a child was the next Nancy Drew book. Then I discovered Agatha Christie. There was no looking back after that. I realized what I enjoyed most as a reader was the thrill of the chase, the chance to work out a puzzle on my own, pit my wits against the sleuth in the book. When I took up writing, I wanted to create this sort of experience for my reader. The cozy mystery genre is perfect for this because I am able to give my readers the chance to solve a complex problem without having to subject them to guts and gore. There’s a slice of family life thrown in, an interesting and unique family like the Patels. The food is just an added bonus.

How did you break into the field?

I am a self published writer. I started reading Kindle books several years ago and discovered many other good indie writers. Reading their books made me realize I could create my own platform as long as I wrote good books people wanted to read. I took up the NaNoWriMo 2015 challenge and wrote half of Gone with the Wings. After that, there was no turning back.

What do you want readers to take away from reading your works?

I want readers to have fun! I also hope they enjoy a glimpse of Indian culture and try out the yummy recipes given in the book.

What do you find most rewarding about writing?

My books allow me to connect with readers across the world. Maybe I make them smile, or allow them to escape to a make believe world for a while. This connection with the reader, however fleeting, is what makes writing rewarding for me.

What do you find most challenging about writing?

Being a mystery writer can be daunting. I strive to make the mystery deep enough to be enjoyable but not so abstract that readers feel lost or lose interest. Making each book different or better than the previous one is proving to be a challenge for me. One I hope I can overcome. You will have to read all the books in the series to decide if I am successful (wink).

What advice would you give to people wanting to enter the field?

Just start writing! Write whatever comes to mind. Write about the first thing you feel when you wake up. Write about the person sitting next to you in the coffee shop. Describe a movie you saw or the latest TV series. Create a habit of writing and the words will flow. Also, read as much as you can. Nothing widens your horizons like reading.

What type of books do you enjoy reading?

I like all kinds of fiction, mostly cozy mysteries and romance at a high level. I also like to read Jane Austen and other classics.

Is there anything else besides writing you think people would find interesting about you?

Oh yes! I’m a chapter waiting to be written. There are shades of me in my books and characters. Like Meera, I am always creating many interesting recipes and feeding people around me.

What are the best ways to connect with you, or find out more about your work?
