Lori Reynolds thought she’d never return to the home where she spent her teenage years, but her sister Kay’s death from a fall down a staircase, changes all that. Having recently spoken with her sister on the phone, and knowing how worried Kay had been about all the strange things happening in her house, Lori suspects that her sister’s fall was anything but an accident and she resolves to investigate. Now that she has arrived for Kay’s funeral, she is caught up in the very family battles that she had tried to avoid when she left seven years ago. From Kay’s husband, Trevor, to his daughter from a previous marriage, Selena, to Lori’s first love and now Selena’s husband, Marc, to Trevor’s brother, Derek, to Selena’s grandmother, to Trevor and Kay’s daughter, Amber, the tension runs high. Then it really explodes when Trevor’s first wife, Jocelyn, decides to make an appearance. Did any of these family members have a motive strong enough to kill Kay? And if so, what was it? Kay moves closer and closer to the truth behind her sister’s fatal fall.
Interview with the Author
What initially got you interested in writing?
When I was a kid and couldn’t sleep, I would make-up stories to help me relax. Around seventh grade, I had a teacher who had us write radio plays and short stories. I enjoyed it so much, I thought I’d like to do it for a living.
What genres do you write in?
Both Fatal Fall and A Talent for Murder are cozy mysteries.
What drew you to writing these specific genres?
I love the quirky characters and small town feel of cozy mysteries, which isn’t surprising, since I grew up in a small town, where someone always knows someone who can’t wait to discuss all your business. Which made it very difficult to do something your mother didn’t hear about.
How did you break into the field?
Through lots of hard work, and lots of rejections letters. Before A Talent for Murder came out, I was on the verge of giving up writing and finding something more productive to do. Then an agent, after politely declining to represent me, told me that my manuscript was at about the 75 per cent mark. So I took her advice, rewrote the manuscript, and sent it out again. Thankfully, the work paid off.
What do you want readers to take away from reading your works?
I don’t have any grand plan. I just want to bring a little joy to their lives and help them forget their troubles. Along the way, if they discover the importance of family and friends, so much the better.
What do you find most rewarding about writing?
Giving others the same pleasure I’ve enjoyed from reading my favorite authors.
What do you find most challenging about writing?
Transferring what’s in my head to the page. Since I see and hear what’s going on so clearly in my mind, I sometimes forget to describe what’s happening so others can follow.
What advice would you give to people wanting to enter the field?
Follow your heart. Find the kind of book you love to read, read it once for fun, then go back and tear it apart. Study how the author described their characters, how they laid out the plot, etc. And if you get stuck, there are lots of good books out there on every aspect of writing. I should know, I have a bookcase full.
What type of books do you enjoy reading?
Anything in the mystery genre, thrillers, romantic comedies, biographies, and non-fiction on subjects that interest me.
Is there anything else besides writing you think people would find interesting about you?
I’m afraid of heights. When I was growing up, I didn’t want anyone to know, so I always rode the Ferris wheel, even though I was terrified. I must have done a good job of disguising my fear because my cousin didn’t realize the truth until we were grown-ups.
