Her own past could be a reporter’s biggest story in this twisting thriller about murder and family secrets by the New York Times bestselling author T.R. Ragan.

Plagued by traumatic childhood memories, crime reporter Sawyer Brooks still struggles to gain control of her rage, her paranoia, and her life. Now, after finally getting promoted at work, she is forced to return home and face her past.

River Rock is where she’d been abandoned by her two older sisters to suffer alone, and in silence, the unspeakable abuses of her family. It’s also where Sawyer’s best friend disappeared and two teenage girls were murdered. Three cold cases dead and buried with the rest of the town’s secrets.

When another girl is slain in a familiar grisly fashion, Sawyer is determined to put an end to the crimes. Pulled back into the horrors of her family history, Sawyer must reconcile with her estranged sisters, who both have shattering memories of their own. As Sawyer’s investigation leads to River Rock’s darkest corners, what will prove more dangerous—what she knows of the past or what she has yet to discover?

Author Interview

What initially got you interested in writing?

I was pregnant with my fourth child and on leave of absence. Bored out of my mind, my sister gave me a romance novel to read—A Knight in Shining Armor by Jude Deveraux. The escapism I experienced was out of this world. Instantly, I knew I wanted to learn to write and provide readers with that same amazing feeling. I started writing a time travel romance that very day, and I never looked back.

What genres do you write in?

When I first started writing, I thought I would write time travel romances for the rest of my life. I signed with an agent early on and we did get some interest from editors, but we couldn’t make a sale. About 15 years later, I read about Lisa Gardner transitioning from writing romance to thrillers. I followed suit and wrote ABDUCTED, which stayed in the top five at Amazon for months. I’ve been writing in the thriller genre ever since.

What drew you to writing these specific genres?

I have always loved reading books in many genres. So, naturally, in my pursuit of publication, I wrote in my favorite genres, which included time travel romance, contemporary romance, romantic suspense, and thrillers.

How did you break into the field?

Frustrated and unable to get noticed by any of the big publishers in the industry, I self-published in 2011. I sold thousands of romance novels, but once I published my first thriller, everything changed. For the first time, big-five publishers were approaching me. By the time I signed with Thomas and Mercer, I had sold over 350,000 books. I went with Amazon because they gave authors more leeway when it came to choosing covers and titles and, in my opinion, they thought outside of the box.

What do you want readers to take away from reading your works?

I want them to feel empowered. I want my readers to believe they can overcome any obstacle thrown their way. We all know life can be tough, but you must stay strong and persevere no matter the odds. Don’t just survive. Thrive!

What do you find most rewarding about writing?

Writing THE END is absolutely the most rewarding thing about writing. Starting a book with nothing but a blank page in front of me is always daunting. But I put one word in front of the other. I do it everyday and pretty soon I have a first draft. There is still a lot of work ahead, but I’ve done it again. It’s an amazing feeling.

What do you find most challenging about writing?

The first 100 pages. Whether it’s the first book in a series, or the last, the first hundred pages never come easily for me. Who are my characters and what do they want to achieve? More importantly, why should readers care? It’s up to me to spend time thinking about the answers to these questions before I start writing. If I don’t care about my heroine, my readers won’t care either.

What advice would you give to people wanting to enter the field?

Read and write. A lot. If you want it bad enough, there is no excuse to stop you from starting that book today. Write every day. I learned the most from writing my first book. It took me five years. If you have a full-time job, give up your favorite TV show and use that time to write. Just do it.

What type of books do you enjoy reading?

I enjoy many genres. I love seeing how other authors weave words. I enjoyed Dark Matter by Black Crouch, The Institute by Stephen King, Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman. I love anything written by Gillian Flynn, Liane Moriarty, and Lisa Gardner. I’d much rather read than watch TV.

Is there anything else besides writing you think people would find interesting about you?

I truly believe anything is possible. I love reading stories about everyday people overcoming huge life obstacles and going on to live a satisfying life. When I first set out to write a book, I wanted to prove to myself that I could do anything I set my mind to. I was determined and nothing could stop me. If you want something bad enough, hard work and perseverance could be the key to making your dreams come true.
