Carrie Singleton is just about done with Clover Ridge, Connecticut until she’s offered a job as the head of programs and events at the spooky local library, complete with its own librarian ghost. Her first major event is a program presented by a retired homicide detective, Al Buckley, who claims he knows who murdered Laura Foster, a much-loved part-time library aide who was bludgeoned to death fifteen years earlier. As he invites members of the audience to share stories about Laura, he suddenly keels over and dies.

The medical examiner reveals that poison is what did him in and Carrie feels responsible for having surged forward with the program despite pushback from her director. Driven by guilt, Carrie’s determined to discover who murdered the detective, convinced it’s the same man who killed Laura all those years ago. Luckily for Carrie, she has a friendly, knowledgeable ghost by her side. But as she questions the shadows surrounding Laura’s case, disturbing secrets come to light and with each step Carrie takes, she gets closer to ending up like Al.

Now it’s due or die for Carrie in Death Overdue the delightful first in a new cozy series by Allison Brook.

Interview With The Author

What initially got you interested in writing?

I wanted to be a writer since I was in elementary school. I’ve always been an avid reader.

What genres do you write in?

I write mysteries, romantic suspense, and novels for kids

What drew you to writing these specific genres?

I always loved mysteries, so I gravitated to that genre automatically. Romance suspense is a first cousin to mystery. I began writing books for kids when my two sons were growing up.

How did you break into the field?

I first was published as a children’s book author many years ago. I kept submitting my manuscripts to agents. I finally got an agent and she sold my first book AND DON’T BRING JEREMY.

What do you want readers to take away from reading your works?

My goal is to have readers smile as they read the final words of my last chapter, thinking: that was a fun read. Regardless of genre, I am always writing about my characters, their relationships with one another and how they deal with life’s problems.  My subject is always the human condition. I’d like my readers to come away with the realization that, like my characters, we’re complex and resilient.

What do you find most rewarding about writing?

I love when a reader tells me how much he or she enjoys my novels.

What do you find most challenging about writing?

Plotting can get pretty complicated sometimes. It often involves problem solving. Sometimes I feel like a puppeteer, dealing with various subplots and characters while retaining the reader’s attention

What advice would you give to people wanting to enter the field?

Read in your genre; get involved with other authors; keep on writing. And try not to get discouraged by rejections. Keep an open mind to genuine suggestions and critiques.

What type of books do you enjoy reading?

I love well-written mysteries, some literary fiction.

Is there anything else besides writing you think people would find interesting about you?

I love to travel, watch foreign and indy films, view mystery shows on TV. I knit, love to do Sudoku and crossword puzzles. I especially love to talk to my grandkids on FaceTime, and have dinner out with my Significant Other.
