Abby McCree spends a summer showing family films under the stars—only to end the season with an unexpected slasher flick . . .

Ushered once again onto another committee by the mayor of Snowberry Creek, Washington, Abby is tasked with keeping the box office receipts of the town’s Movies in the Park nights. Cut to the director’s chair from where she’s suddenly organizing the summer’s last feature. From the opening scene through the final credits, Abby feels she’s earned nominations for best volunteer, best movie date with her tenant Tripp Blackston—and best daughter for ignoring her mother Phoebe’s own movie date with Owen Quinn.

Unfortunately, Abby and the others are treated to a post-credits scene: the body of local insurance agent Mitchell Anders. This discovery is followed by a plot twist revealing that the murder weapon comes from Owen’s food truck. With her mother’s boyfriend suspected of murder, Abby starts her own investigation determined to shine a spotlight on the real killer . . .

Author Interview

What initially got you interested in writing?

I’ve always been an avid reader and enjoyed writing. I think my first short story was something I wrote while I was in grade school. I don’t remember the plot, but title was Ponies in the Clouds. I love  the idea of a world where I could go cruising thought the clouds on magical ponies.

What genres do you write in?

I have written several different types of romances—historical, paranormal, fantasy, and contemporary. Most recently, I have been writing a cozy mystery series, The Abby McCree Mysteries.

What drew you to writing these specific genres?

For me personally, I get drawn into fictional worlds through the eyes of characters that I care about. That’s true whether it’s a book I’m reading or one that I’m writing. I want to learn what drives the characters to make the decisions they do and root for them to succeed. Both romances and cozy mysteries are very much character driven genres. At their very best, the stories are populated by a cast of characters the readers care about and want to spend time with.

How did you break into the field?

I met my first published writer, Janice Kay Johnson, about thirty years ago and quickly became fascinated by what she was doing. She was very patient with all of my questions and thought I had some solid ideas for some stories of my own. She eventually encouraged me to try my hand at writing a book and kindly “held my hand” through the whole process. My first manuscript didn’t sell, but my second one did. Janice and I are still brainstorming buddies who meet regularly whenever one of us is working on a new plot idea.

What do you want readers to take away from reading your works?

First and foremost, I write to entertain. I love it when a reader lets me know that they loved my characters or that the mystery kept them guessing until the end. When they read the final page, I want them to be glad they spent the time lost in the world I’ve created and with luck are already counting the days until the next book comes out.

What do you find most rewarding about writing?

I love connecting with readers and other writers because a love of books is something we all have in common.

What do you find most challenging about writing?

Staying focused on getting the words on the page, especially if something in the story isn’t working for some reason. Luckily, I can always call my friend Janice and talk through the problem and bounce ideas back and forth until I get it figured out.

What advice would you give to people wanting to enter the field?

Writing is a very solitary business and can be lonely at times. I think it’s really important to find a way to connect with other writers. There might be a group through your local library or perhaps a professional writers’ organization. Those can either be genre specific or more general in nature. A lot of those groups have in-person meetings, but there are also a lot of opportunities online as well.

What type of books do you enjoy reading?

I read romances of different kinds, fantasy books, some science fiction, as well as mysteries and romantic suspense.

Is there anything else besides writing you think people would find interesting about you?

Although I was an English major in college, I’ve always loved reading about geology for some reason. Years ago, I combined my love of romances and geology to create my first paranormal series, The Paladins. Earthquakes and volcanoes both played an important role in the storyline, and I made a special trip to Mount St. Helens to do research for the books. The mountain was pretty rumbly the day we were there, which I can tell you was a bit scary.

What are the best ways to connect with you, or find out more about your work?

I post news about my books on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/AMorganAuthor/) , Twitter (@AlexisMorgan), and my website (www.alexismorgan.com). People can also sign up for my newsletter on my website if they’d like reminders when I have a new book coming out.
