Interview with the Author

What initially got you interested in writing?

I was born to write. As soon as an elementary school teacher placed a bulky pencil into my tiny right hand, I focused on learning to form words so I could record my ideas on paper. I’ve processed all major life events by writing about them – usually for my eyes only. When a university intake counselor asked about interests, it took digging to identifying writing as a favorite pastime – it seemed strange that anyone would pay for something so integral to who I was. Following her suggestion to major in journalism, I became a marketing communication professional who thrived on telling the stories of people impacted by the work of the humanitarian organization where I worked for 27 years. My son came home from a Boy Scout camping trip five years ago gushing about a sighting I interpreted as Bigfoot. While he spoke, my mind conjured up an explanation for the injustice of only kids getting to see such things and not their moms. I told a friend at work about the experience and my off-the-wall hypothesis, and she suggested I write a paranormal novel. My Bigfoot manuscript thankfully was never published, but the many rewrites gave me a project to learn about novel structure, plotting, character and setting development, conflict, and finding my voice as an author. My Rim Country Mysteries have given me the outlet I needed my entire life for thoughts that wake me in the middle of the night, pellet me in the shower, and grab my attention when I’m supposed to concentrate on other things. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the hard work it has taken to develop my storytelling skills through novel writing.

What genres do you write in?

Mystery and thriller

What drew you to writing these specific genres?

I love stories with action and intrigue. I like the fast pace of thrillers and the “putting together a puzzle” of mysteries. I combine them in my writing.

How did you break into the field?

I’ve attended conferences and networked with other writers through organizations like Sisters in Crime, Mystery Writers of America, and International Thriller Writers. Through those contacts, I learned how to write in my genre, and then discovered my current publisher, Short on Time Books, a small press in Arizona.

What do you want readers to take away from reading your works?

I want them mostly to enjoy the stories. I do have a message in them that ordinary people can accomplish more than they think they can, and it is never too late to discover your hidden talents. The protagonist in my books is middle-aged, sharp witted, and physically fit while still being family oriented and making mistakes.

What do you find most rewarding about writing?

It gives me an outlet for my creativity, and it allows me to combine that creativity with my love of learning about new things and different cultures.

What do you find most challenging about writing?

The first couple of books were great fun and mostly wrote themselves. Keeping up the pace of writing and keeping the stories fresh and unique becomes more challenging as I develop and expand the series. I love a great challenge, though!

What advice would you give to people wanting to enter the field?

Take the time to learn how to write a novel, and write the best one you can. There are things that make a good story and things that make it marketable. Keep them both in mind as you write, but don’t start trying to market it until you have a superior product – and you know it because you’ve had it edited by a developmental editor as well as a line editor and a proofreader. Make sure you know who your audience is, and write to them as if you were telling a story to a close friend.

What type of books do you enjoy reading?

I love fast-paced books with lots of action, featuring a strong female protagonist who is flawed but overcomes both her challenges and her flaws.

Is there anything else besides writing you think people would find interesting about you?

I recently retired from an international humanitarian aid organization that sent me to exotic places like South America, the Caribbean, and Africa. Those experiences have had a tremendous impact on my life and my writing.

What are the best ways to connect with you, or find out more about your work?
