Evil has awoken in Asheville, North Carolina, and Terra Rowan must prepare the Ladies of the Biltmore Society for battle. With her familiar, Pixel, a crooked leg fluffy orange cat, and her apprentice Abigail Oakhaven, a stubborn teenage girl with a bloodline dating back to the beginning of time, she begins their journey. The witch hunters have come to the Appalachian Mountains in search of the last witch of Salem. The magic of the mountains can no longer protect her and her coven. She must travel to the one place on earth that holds the secret to save mankind – Dark Corner.
Combining elements from different cultures, Appalachian folklore, Celtic legends, Native American mysticism, Dark Corner continues its new witch mythology while staying true to the realm of cozy mystery.
Terra Rowan is a witch trapped between worlds and lost in time.
Interview with the Author
What initially got you interested in writing? I don’t know. All I know is that I’ve wanted to write as long as I was able to read. I was always writing in school particularly during math class and then studied journalism in college.
What genres do you write in? I write cozy mysteries, cozy paranormal mysteries. I have a science fiction novel.
What drew you to writing these specific genres? I was drawn to cozy because I grew up reading Nancy Drew – what girl didn’t? After Nancy Drew, I read Agatha Christie. I love the element of surprise and suspense as well as the continuing relationship with the characters. The science fiction book was an accident.
How did you break into the field? I wrote my first book in the Antique Hunters Mystery Series while I was housebound after ankle surgery. It was a good diversion. My husband then pursued publishers and it was published.
What do you want readers to take away from reading your works? I’d like to give them a pleasant break from the day-to-day and have fun reading the books.
What do you find most rewarding about writing? I love creating alternate worlds. My books take place within real locations but I’ve used creative license with some of the locations within the real world, if that makes sense. For the Antique Hunters, I always twist history slightly so it focuses on a real event but twists it hopefully in a believable way.
What do you find most challenging about writing? Finding the time. There is never enough time. I have a full time job, two puppies so I feel as if I am constantly struggling to find time.
What advice would you give to people wanting to enter the field? Keep writing and to listen particularly to those around you in stores, at restaurants or even while you’re working out. It creates great dialogue and potential situations.
What type of books do you enjoy reading? I am all over the place with my reading. On my TBR shelf right now, I have a biography of the Romanov dynasty, a biography of diamonds, the new John Grisham, a fictional biography of Varina Davis by Charles Frazier and I am currently reading Family Trust by Kathy Wang. I have five shelves currently of TBRs.
Is there anything else besides writing you think people would find interesting about you? I love gemstones and collect them currently mostly in jewelry form but I also have a large collection of uncut stones. I used to want to be a gemologist but writing took over. I do have one mystery called Gem Hunter though. People would be surprised to see me red with mud after visiting Hiddenite, North Caroliina, the only emerald mine in the United States.
What are the best ways to connect with you, or find out more about your work? I am on Facebook but my posts have been sporadic lately due to the demands of my full-time job. I have a website, vickivass.com and send out a newsletter. You can sign up for the newsletter on the website.
Thanks for letting me stop by!
