In the first of a delectable new Southern-set baking cozy series, Sophia Cummings, pastry chef extraordinaire, must craft the perfect cake for an old friend’s wedding while sifting through the suspects in a murder.
Bucolic Rumford, Kentucky has glowing fields of bluegrass, a fine selection of bourbons, and now a professional pastry chef. Broken-hearted Sophia Cummings has come home from New York City. She’s not there a minute before she’s charmed into making her high school friend Charlotte’s wedding cake. The kitchen at the Rumford Country Club seems perfect until Chef Emile’s body is discovered, sprawled near the stove, a cast iron skillet on the floor close by.
With one look at the shiny, new frying pan, Sophia knows it’s not Emile’s. She offers her knowledge to Sheriff Carter and her talents to Evelyn, the manager, who needs an interim chef. The mood in the country club is grim: Emile’s peppery personality had burned members and staff alike. Sophia wonders which one of them burned him?
Character Guest Post
I, Bitsy Cummings, swear that my daughter, Sophia Cummings, decided to become a baker just to do me in.
Of course, I wanted her to be a debutante and I’d picked her dress out the day she was born. Do you think she debuted? Of course she didn’t.
I wanted her to be in the Rumford County Fair Beauty Pageant. Do you think she did that? Nope.
I wanted her to take piano lessons so when she got married and hosted parties, she’d be able to sit down and tickle the ivories for her guests. Do you think she did that? Nope.
Don’t even get me started on the Junior League. Me and her daddy, Robert, did the best we could to raise that girl with southern manners and pride, but she wanted to be elbow deep in flour, sugar, and all sorts of icing to even think about getting a bath to look presentable.
I swear, how she told me about her plans not to go to college and go to baking school, though she insists it’s called pastry school, it was to make me look a fool in front of my friends. I’ll never forget it. It was a sunny day during the summer and we were going to the Rumford Country Club, RCC for short, for a lady’s luncheon. I should’ve known something was up when she was all too eager to go, but instead, I put on some lipstick and then a little more, so proud she was going.
Just before we walked into the RCC, she turned to me and told me. I nearly fainted right then and there on the steps of the RCC in front of all of my friends. She knew I was boiling. I get this little twitchy eyebrow thing when I keep in my frustration because there’s no way I could throw my hissy fit because it’d been all the gossip.
Not that my daughter, Sophia Cummings, becoming a pastry chef wasn’t gossip enough for them. Can you imagine the scrutiny behind my back?
As you can tell, Sophia has made it her mission to just upset her poor old mama, and I tell her that when I’m dead and gone, she’s gonna be sorry.
