All of Arizona’s Sun City West heard Sophie “Phee” Kimball’s mom scream bloody murder, but it’s up to the reluctant sleuth to find the killer . . .
Phee’s mother Harriet is going to be a star! At least, that’s how the Sun City West retiree describes her chance to host a live radio program of her book club’s Booked 4 Murder Mystery Hour on Arizona’s KSCW. But instead of chatting about charming cozies, Harriet ends up screaming bloody murder over the airwaves after discovering the body of Howard Buell, the station’s programming director, in a closet—with a pair of sewing shears shoved into his chest.
The number one suspect is Howard’s ex-girlfriend Sylvia Strattlemeyer who believed she was going to host a sewing talk show before Harriet was offered the spot. But not only do the fingerprints found on the scissors not match Sylvia’s, they belong to a woman who passed away twenty years ago at the age of ninety-seven. Now, with the whole town on pins and needles, it’s up to Phee to stitch together enough clues from the past to uncover the identity of a killer in the present . . .
Interview
What initially got you interested in writing?
Reading! Ann always wanted to put her thoughts on paper and create memorable characters. Jim just wanted to craft plotlines that would keep readers turning the pages.
What genres do you write in?
As J.C. Eaton, we write cozy mysteries meant to keep readers laughing and guessing whodunit. We’ve got three different series that range from over-the-top hyperbole (The Sophie Kimball Mysteries) to acerbic humor (The Wine Trail Mysteries).
Ann has written award -winning time travel mysteries for young adults under her own name – Ann I. Goldfarb
What drew you to writing these specific genres?
Ann, a former teacher and school principal, was drawn to time travel mysteries since she was familiar with her target audience – middle grade and high schoolers. In addition, she was always intrigued with the concept of traveling through time.
How did you break into the field?
It was a long, tedious process. We never stopped writing and worked to develop our craft while seeking out an agent and ultimately, a publisher. When we landed agent Dawn Dowdle at Blue Ridge Literary Agency, we thanked our lucky stars. She nurtured us, found us a fabulous publisher, and guided us through the maze of the publishing world.
What do you want readers to take away from reading your works?
A smile and a laugh or two!
What do you find most rewarding about writing?
When all (or most) of the bits and pieces fall into place at the end of the first draft. Then it’s on to the next draft to get it right. We are always rewarded tremendously when our readers tell us they enjoyed our books. That makes our day!
What do you find most challenging about writing?
Solving the mystery ourselves! Although we do outline and plot, we are really pantzers who indeed write by the seat of our pants. Needless to say, it’s a challenge to get it right.
What advice would you give to people wanting to enter the field?
There are so many genres out there. Know what you want to write and keep writing each day even if it’s only a few hundred words. Keep your head in the book. Don’t let rejections discourage you. Most authors will tell you they can wallpaper a room with query rejections. That being said, work to develop your writing and try to attend writer conferences or join critique groups. Many conferences are now virtual so you won’t have to leave home.
What type of books do you enjoy reading?
Jim – thriller and mystery
Ann – mystery, Gothic horror, and humor
Is there anything else besides writing you think people would find interesting about you?
We are foster failures who own four cats and a dog. Correction – four extremely spoiled cats and a very pampered dog. We hate cooking but love eating and pay homage to the microwave oven every day.
