Interview With This Author
What initially got you interested in writing?
Reading. I wanted to write the minute I could read. I wrote my first story when I was five. My mother still has it.
What genres do you write in?
Cozy mystery and science fiction. I also have several screenplays.
What drew you to writing these specific genres?
I began writing cozy mysteries due to my early love of Nancy Drew, Cherry Ames and Vicki Barr. I wrote a short story in second grade, a gothic mystery, called the Secret of the Topaz. My science fiction grew out of my love for creating worlds and developing characters.
How did you break into the field?
My husband sent my first Antique Hunters Mystery to a publisher. She liked it and offered to publish it.
What do you want readers to take away from reading your works?
A combination of fun and mystery. Everything in the world is so serious and heavy today, it is nice to create an alternate world where even though there is murder, there is still humor and enjoyment.
What do you find most rewarding about writing?
I enjoy the process of developing the characters, situations and creating their unique world. I also like the finishing process when it all comes together.
What do you find most challenging about writing?
Plotting. I spend hours and hours with my husband reviewing plot twists and the characters to make a convincing story.
What advice would you give to people wanting to enter the field?
Be persistent and keep writing.
What type of books do you enjoy reading?
I read an eclectic mix of books from biographies to suspense to romance to cozy. Right now, I am reading the Switch, the new book by Joseph Finder and A Lifelong Passion, The letters of Nicholas and Alexandra. The second book is research for the upcoming second book in my Gem Hunter series.
Is there anything else besides writing you think people would find interesting about you?
Like one of my main characters, I love to shop. I love to go to estate sales, antique stores, retail shops or even the gift shops in the airport. It doesn’t mater. I can spend hours shopping and I find it very therapeutic.
What are the best ways to connect with you, or find out more about your work?
I am on Facebook sporadically, haven’t been regular since we brought the puppies home, have a website, vickivass.com, and I send out an occasional newsletter to those who want to sign up for my mailing list. You can send an email to Vicki@vickivass.com to be added to the list.
