Southerners keep their secrets swept under the rug, but what happens when that rug goes up for sale?
Bestselling author Berlye Stone, the most famous citizen to ever come out of Cottonwood, Kentucky, has died and put all her worldly possessions up for auction, but not without leaving one more manuscript behind. A hidden tell-all about Cottonwood that’s got more gossip than a ladies’ luncheon.
When Beryle’s assistant turns up with an ax in her back and the only witness is in a coma, Sheriff Kenni Lowry reckons someone in town will do anything to keep the manuscript from seeing the light of day. Her poppa’s ghost returns to help piece together the life of the Beryle he once knew, but his memory’s a little foggy, and any misstep could cause them a world of trouble. With the help of Deputy Finn Vincent, can Kenni sort through the secrets buried in Beryle’s books, or will this be her final chapter?
Interview with the Author
What initially got you interested in writing?
I’m a member of a book club and with their encouragement I started to think about writing a book, then my husband pushed it along. So glad he did that!
What genres do you write in?
I’m a cozy mystery author
What drew you to writing these specific genres?
I loved to watch shows like Matlock, Scarecrow and Mrs. King, Quincy and many other great detective show, so naturally I was drawn to writing similar plots.
How did you break into the field?
In 2004 I self published my first book. It was practically unheard of at the time, but I found my niche and had great success. In 2013 I wrote a new cozy paranormal mystery, A Ghostly Undertaking. I sold over 30k copies in a month’s period and got the attention of many publishers and agents. It was then that I took a publishing contract from HarperCollins for a six book deal. Now I’m currently with three traditional publishers writing mystery as well as continued to self publish.
What do you want readers to take away from reading your works?
I want them to escape from their daily life into the southern fun and charm as well as solving a great crime. I want them to find enjoyment and laughter. I’m a pretty light read that’ll give a good belly laugh.
What do you find most rewarding about writing?
My readers! I’m very connected with them. In fact, I host my own reader event every year on a different dinner mystery train around the USA. It’s a blast. I love them.
What do you find most challenging about writing?
The editing part. There’s the first draft and the final draft that I love. The mucky middle is the editing, though I know it makes it much better.
What advice would you give to people wanting to enter the field?
Sit down and write. The hardest part is forcing myself to sit down.
What type of books do you enjoy reading?
I love to read women’s fiction. Not the romance stuff, but the emotional family stuff.
Is there anything else besides writing you think people would find interesting about you?
Hmmm…well, I’ve got a degree in Elementary Education as well as a masters in Family Therapy. I loved both of those jobs and if writing hadn’t taken over, I’d still be a therapist. I do keep my certification up in case the book gig goes south, but that’s none time too soon!
What are the best ways to connect with you, or find out more about your work?
Tonya Kappes is a USA Today Bestselling author who’s married (to Eddy) and has four grown children, grown is an overstatement. According to the law they are grown, but they are all in different colleges in the United States. She’s known for her super charged characters that not only spill humor all over the pages, but end up tripping over a lot of dead bodies.
