Interview with the Author:

What initially got you interested in writing?

From a very young age, I considered myself a poet. ‘Roses are red, violets are blue’ had nothing on me; in my five year old opinion. As I grew, I was drawn into film and the idea of script-writing; a notion I still wouldn’t mind toying with one day. I wrote many a script about other universes, an all-girl pop band and such but alas my seven to thirteen year old self, never made any leap with these. Then I moved on to songs; and that’s when I realised that my main love is the love of story-telling and I don’t mind what format it comes in. Through a painting, a dance, a novel, a play, a song; just tell me stories! And my love of stories, lead to my love to create stories and my favourite form of expression was with words; thus I write.

How did you decide to make the move into being a published author?

Being published is always something I have dreamed of, though when I originally dreamt it was of the traditional way where a big-named publishing house does most if not all of the grunt work. I decided to go at it alone one afternoon when I was teaching. My classroom book selection was growing old and after we’d read Julia Donaldson’s ‘The Gruffalo’ more times than I can count, I decided to launch into my own made-up tale. The children’s positive reaction to my stories inspired me to dabble in the field of self-publishing.

What do you want readers to take away from reading your works?

I want readers to momentarily lose themselves in my works and become enthralled in the lives of the characters and the fantasy world around them. I want them to get that gooey; excited or emotional pang that all of us book lovers get when we think of a favourite tale. Basically, I want my works to be enjoyed and not for the reader to feel like they have been told a story but for them to feel as though they have experienced it.

What do you find most rewarding about writing?

The thing I find most rewarding about writing is that wonderful feeling of having life, love and adventure at the tips of my fingers. A place where everything goes the way I want no matter how outrageous or farfetched. I delight in the opportunity to experience things that may never happen, and the way of momentarily making everything impossible, possible.

What do you find most challenging about writing?

Finding that great idea; the one that makes your toes curl and causes butterflies in your stomach. I find creating characters exciting and inventing worlds fascinating but locking down on that one idea that gets the ball rolling, is more of a challenge. That said, once you get that idea, it creates that feeling I previously mentioned which is what I love most about writing. So perhaps what I find most challenging about writing is also the most rewarding to me in the end.

What advice would you give to people want to enter the field?

I could go on and on with tips for writers but my three main points would be:

• Get a good idea– Though some experienced writers may be able to write a fascinating piece on watching paint dry, for those of us trying to break into the market, I’d say find something that inspires you (unless of course that is watching paint dry) and build on it. Throw in a mixture of characters, a series of events and one main issue to be resolved.
• Write and rewrite within an inch of your life. Rewrite until you’re pulling your hair out and are tempted to throw your laptop out the window.
• Don’t give up– sounds cliché but is so true it’s almost unreal. You’ll never get anywhere if you allow distractions or bumps in the road to steer you off track. Stay focussed on what you are aiming for and keep going until you get there.

About S. McPherson:

S. McPherson is a young British expat living in Dubai and working as a Foundation Stage 1 (FS1) teacher. When she was younger S. McPherson travelled a lot with her family, though, no matter how often her surroundings changed, one thing never did. And this was her love of writing and dreaming up the impossible. After combining her two loves of teaching children and writing, S. McPherson self-published her first book; a rhyming verse children’s story titled ‘Shania Streep wanted to Sleep’. Thus fuelling her love of seeing her work in print and sharing her stories. This is S. McPherson’s first novel.
