A traveling carnival with a live tiger joins the parishioner’s harvest fair at The First Church of the Evening Star and Everlasting Light. Accused again when counterfeit bills are discovered at the carnival, and when the war bond money goes missing, Agnes sets out to restore her reputation and locate the money. Her attempts lead her into harm’s way when she discovers a friend’s betrayal and even more about carnival life than she bargained for.

Granddaughter Katherine’s turbulent love triangle with a doctor and an FBI agent rivals Agnes’s own on-again, off-again relationship with Godfrey.

Interview with the Author

What initially got you interested in writing? At age seven, I was writing poems to my mother. By high school, back when we huddled in caves to escape the dinosaurs, I wrote short stories on my portable typewriter, many still in folders. Over the years as a young wife and mother I continued to write short stories. I published my first book in 2014.

What genres do you write in?  I started writing cozy cat mysteries. Black Cat’s Legacy, Black Cat and the Lethal Lawyer, Black Cat and the Accidental Angel. Then I added a cozy mystery/adventure. Set during WWII, elderly, eccentric Mrs. Odboddy is fighting the war from the home front. See Mrs. Odboddy Hometown Patriot, Mrs. Odboddy Undercover Courier, and my latest, Mrs. Odboddy – And Then There was a Tiger.

What drew you to writing these specific genres? Years ago, I read The Silent Meow, by Paul Gallico. The book was ‘written’ by the cat! The concept fascinated me. Thus, my cozy cat mysteries are partly told through the cat’s point of view. I’m told the cat’s narration comes through as my best writing. (Maybe I speak cat!) The WWII series was a request from my daughter to write about an eccentric elderly woman who is always in trouble. For further character development, I chose the WWII era and involve her in little known historical events. The result never fails to impress my readers.

How did you break into the field? You learn by joining writer’s groups and critique groups, attending conferences and/or working with personal writing coaches. Finding the right mentor is critical for growth as a writer. I’ve worked one on one with three different mentor/coaches/editors. The correct publishing path is a personal choice depending on multiple considerations including finances and opportunities.

What do you want readers to take away from reading your works? I want my readers to have fun and laugh. Leave troubles behind and enjoy my fictional world.

What do you find most rewarding about writing? The writing itself is fun, but even better to hear from a reader who had enjoyed my books.

What do you find most challenging about writing? Getting more readers to purchase the book in the first place, so they can enjoy it and then tell me about it!

What advice would you give to people wanting to enter the field?  Don’t wait until you’re retired to start writing. Learn the craft well before trying to publish. Don’t expect to get rich.

What type of book s do you enjoy reading?  I read mostly cozy mystery fiction.

Is there anything else besides writing you think people would find interesting about you? I’m and animal lover, wife, mother, grandmother and a great-grandma. I bake, sew, paint, garden and volunteer.  Other than that, I’m just ‘me!’

Elaine Faber lives in Northern California with her husband and two feline companions. She is a member of Sisters in Crime, California Cat Writers, and Northern California Publishers and Authors. She volunteers with the American Cancer Society Discovery Shop. She enjoys speaking on author panels, sharing highlights of her novels. Her short stories have appeared in national magazines and multiple anthologies. She has published seven books. In addition to the Mrs. Odboddy Mysteries Elaine writes the Black Cat Mysteries.
