Shot to death in his home, Morgan Tutwiler leaves behind a multimillion-dollar business and a daughter who hasn’t spoken to him in years. And she isn’t alone in wanting him dead. Plenty of people wanted the most hated man in Denver dead in P. H. Turner’s latest novel in the Claire Callahan series.

Reminiscent of the finest gumshoe storytelling, Secrets and Lies, would not be complete without Turner’s signature quirky characters and inventive plot.

About P.H. Turner

Interview with the Author

What initially got you interested in writing?

When I was a child, I scribbled stories in a notebook about cowboys and Indians— I was a Texas kid, after all. Then my father fell ill, and my mother became the breadwinner. Watching her was a terrific life lesson. She taught my sister and me that we must be able to support ourselves and our children.

I jotted down ideas for characters and plots while I worked writing and producing news and teaching broadcast journalism. I returned to my love of writing fiction (no cowboys and Indians) after my children were launched.

What genres do you write in?

I have written four romantic suspense novels, one stand-alone and a trilogy that takes place on the Navaho Reservation in Arizona, before writing the Claire Callahan mystery series. I love writing about Claire. She’s honing her craft and looking for the ‘one,’ and she has her fair share of bumps along the road.

What drew you to writing these specific genres?

I like the happy-ever-after-endings of romances, and I enjoy writing the twists and surprise endings mysteries have.

How did you break into the field?

I broke into the writing field by having a news editor take my head off when I made a mistake. Fastest learning curve ever!

What do you want readers to take away from reading your works?

I was inspired to write fiction while riding the light rail to work in Denver. Every woman on the train pulled out a book or an e-reader. With the demands of a job and a family pulling at us, the commute was our only “me” time. They are my audience, and I want to entertain them with stories of strong women, who make mistakes, get up, and tackle the problem again.

What do you find most rewarding about writing?

The chance to connect with readers.

What do you find most challenging about writing?

Keeping it believable. I don’t want my audience to have to suspend their disbelief to enjoy my books. I want my characters to be believable, people my readers recognize from their lives, and people who can be heroic and yet, have shortcomings. All my characters aren’t likable, and that too is believable.

What advice would you give to people wanting to enter the field?

Write. Fail. Get better. Get rejected. Write. Get better. Rinse and repeat.

What type of books do you enjoy reading?

Mysteries, thrillers, and chick-lit.

Is there anything else besides writing you think people would find interesting about you?

I enjoy baking and cooking for my family. My mother was a home economics teacher back in the days when that was part of the high school curriculum. She taught my sister and me how to cook and sew, and those turned out to be two handy skills.

What are the best ways to connect with you, or find out more about your work?
