DEATH BY AUTOPSY

Pathologist Toni Day is faced with a situation most pathologists only joke about when Beulah Pritchard comes back to life on her autopsy table. Beulah, a nurse at Cascade Perrine Regional Medical Center where Toni works, is a malicious gossip and had been a particular thorn in Toni’s side for many years. Recently promoted to an administrative job, she was in a position to irritate Toni even more.

When Beulah drives her car off a snow-covered road into the Low Line Canal, it appears at first to be an accident. She survives her injuries and her hypothermia, but not for long. When her husband is found dead in the trunk of Beulah’s car, it’s clear that both of them were murdered; but by whom? And why?

Things become even more complicated when Beulah’s estranged sister sues Toni and the hospital for wrongful death, claiming that Toni killed Beulah by doing an autopsy on her while she was still alive.

GREIVOUS BODILY HARM

A new administrator is hired to ease the transition when overcrowded and landlocked Perrine Memorial Hospital is bought out by a behemoth hospital system that covers much of the Pacific Northwest and promises to build a new hospital in Twin Falls. But Marcus Manning, a good ole boy with roots in Twin Falls, far from making anything easier, manages to earn the enmity of medical staff and employees alike as he ruthlessly goes about eliminating anyone who might oppose him in his quest to become not only CEO of Perrine Memorial, but CEO of the entire system.

Unwisely, he starts his campaign with pathologist Toni Day, who blows the whistle on Marcus’s twisted campaign of lies, blackmail and sexual abuse until the medical staff finally considers firing him, but is saved the trouble by someone with a more permanent solution … of cyanide.

Toni, as one of the prime suspects, is forced to solve the mystery of Marcus’s murder to keep herself out of jail, and as she delves further into the private lives of those involved in Marcus’s life, finds herself forced to kill in order to save her life and finally learn the truth.

TOO MUCH BLOOD

toomuchbloodbookcover

Pathologist Toni Day returns in this gory tale of a sleazy lawyer and his scam involving the doctors at Perrine Memorial Hospital, in which their earnings go directly into his hedge fund via an offshore leasing company, avoiding taxation. That is, until the economy takes its worst dive since 1929, and Jay Braithwaite Burke’s hedge fund is revealed as a Ponzi scheme. The Feds move in. Jay declares bankruptcy and disappears, only to reappear two months later, dead in his car in the middle of the snowy interstate.

At autopsy, Toni discovers that Jay bled to death. Shortly thereafter, Jay’s partner also bleeds to death. Jay’s widow and four children are kept on the move by a series of house fires, and soon everybody ends up at Toni’s house. Toni’s life is already complicated enough; her work schedule is brutal, and she fears that her husband, Hal, is having an affair. In the meantime, a mysterious illness casts a bloody pall over the Christmas season. Toni must use all her pathological expertise to keep her loved ones from a similar fate, and in so doing nearly comes to a bloody end herself.

INTERVIEW WITH THE AUTHOR

What initially got you interested in writing?

Murder She Wrote. It gave me the idea that this was something I could do after I retired.

What genres do you write in?

Murder mysteries. Medical thrillers. I’ve been compared to Tess Gerritsen.

What drew you to writing these specific genres?

Reading them. I write what I love to read.

How did you break into the field?

I submitted my first novel to an indie publisher, iUniverse. They gave it Editor’s Choice.

What do you want readers to take away from reading your works?

Well, naturally, I want them to take away the idea that I am a terrific author and that my books are awesome, must-read mysteries. Also, with my medical background as a pathologist, I want them to gain some understanding of what a pathologist is and what they do, and why.

What do you find most rewarding about writing?

The way I start with an idea and watch where it takes me. I don’t outline my books, because I can’t stick to an outline. I let the story take me the way it wants to. That way I can really get on a roll and the words just pour out onto the page.

What do you find most challenging about writing?

Sometimes I get stuck. The words won’t come. There really is such a thing as writer’s block. The only cure for that is time. The trick is to just write something. Anything. You can always go back and delete it if you don’t want to use it.

What advice would you give to people wanting to enter the field?

Just start writing. Whatever you want. Don’t wait until you have time, because you never will.

What type of books do you enjoy reading?

Mysteries. The same stuff I write. Sometimes I also read romances or chick-lit.

Is there anything else besides writing you think people would find interesting about you?

Well, I’m a pathologist. That’s pretty interesting. I like to garden, too. And by the way, I never did retire, and now I don’t want to.

What are the best ways to connect with you, or find out more about your work?

I have a website, janebennettmunro.com, and 2 blogs, jbmunro.com, and bigjuicycolon.com. The latter is for little vignettes from the lab and pathology, stuff people might find helpful or informative. There’s a story behind the name, too. I also have a Facebook page, and each of my books has its own page. I have a Twitter account, too. My e-mail is silverfox@cableone.net, and just FYI, I love to speak at book clubs.

I’ve published 4 mysteries in a series, and the 5th should be out sometime this summer.
